01 Aug MUŻA Project: Restoration works on the main façade of the building now complete …
Restoration works on the historic façade of the building is now complete as the project keeps moving forward.
This has been an intensive project. Stone replacement was kept to a minimum and only severely deteriorated stones were replaced. The marble sculpture works over the main doorway was also cleaned, In particular areas, this process had to be repeated close to 20 times. The façade was given a yellow ochre patina so as to render it homogeneous. This was considered necessary in view of reconstruction works undertaken in modern stone following severe damages which the building suffered during world war two and in later decades.
The colour of the apertures was chosen following extensive research. Research suggests that apertures were painted in imitation of bronze and other ‘noble’ materials during the early modern period. The light green colour mimics weathered bronze apertures.
